Potty Learning for toddlers or kids

Potty learning is a crucial phase in child development, so managing appropriately for our child is prior, as each child is unique.

Many of us have a question: Can Potty learning impact the child’s development?

The answer is “Yes”, and it has a significant impact.

For instance, if we skip this part, the child tends to lose confidence in social places while increasing the chances of not establishing their emotions for Potty.

On the contrary, overdoing it makes a child feel irritated, which leads them to hide their feelings.

“Balancing” is the Key solution for successful Potty learning.

As a parent of toddlers, we often come across the term “Potty training”, but I intend to use it as Potty learning instead.

When we approach a play school or directly a school, teachers ask this question Has the child been Potty trained at home? Were we have an answer of either Yes or No?

The question arises: Is it crucial to help them learn to Potty at this early stage?

Then You have landed on the right article about how and where to start with acceptance of the child.

According to Wikipedia, we come across the term Toilet training as “Toilet training (also potty training or toilet learning) is the process of training someone, particularly a toddler or infant, to use the toilet for urination and defecation. Attitudes toward training in recent history have fluctuated substantially, and may vary across cultures and according to demographics. Many of the contemporary approaches to toilet training favor a behaviouralism– and cognitive psychology-based approach.”

To simplify it, I will segregate this topic into the following divisions to help parents better understand their children in Potty learning.

Look for readiness:

Potty learning always starts with the willingness of the child. Not all children will be willing to learn to Potty at the same age. It varies based on the perception of the child. Some start at one and a half years, some at two years, some at three years, and some even take more time.

How to Look for Readiness?

  • The child needs to know when they need to pee and when they are peeing.
  • Dry diapers at night are also a sign that they are showing readiness.
  • Look for the child to understand the basic instructions you communicate.

 Preparation for Potty learning:

  1.  Start a conversation with the child about how important and how to use the Potty.
  2.  Give them some time to understand the thing in their perception.
  3. Start keeping the Potty at a place they are convenient for some days.
  4.  Avoid wearing diapers in the daytime and make them wear panties to feel the wetness immediately when they pee. We can buy panties with cartoon characters, a kid’s favorite color, and so on to keep them engaged.
  5.  Help them for the initial days by taking them to Potty places and making them feel comfortable whenever they want to pee.
  6.  We can set up a high stool, or toilet seater, which helps them to use the Potty directly.
  7.  Allow them to handle it on their own after some days.

Learning without Disturbance:

  1.  It’s crucial because the child decides whether to continue it or still needs some time to process things.
  2. Consistency plays a vital role in Potty learning.
  3. Setting a time with regular intervals help us to take them to the Potty and also helps the child to follow the same.
  4.  Child needs space to learn a thing without any disturbance. For instance, rushing them to make it fast or scolding them for messy things that happen without intention spoils their mood, and they get easily irritated.

  • Appreciation can make a difference in children allowing them to realize that they have accomplished what is complex with their potential.
  • It doesn’t need to be materialistic.
  • Always appreciation with an encouraging tone and hug can make them feel special too.

Tips on Potty learning:

  • Avoid giving them more water before they sleep, which makes them feel like peeing at midnight.
  • Keep the Potty in one place for some days until they are comfortable and later shift to the restroom, making it easy for them to handle.
  • Use diapers at night and tell them to wake us up if they want to pee in mid-night.
  • Have patience with the child as they are new to it.
  • Never give up in between due to the chores as they tend to mess up things that they were following in past days.

Potty learning is easy when it is attained with a child’s readiness, preparation, and consistency simultaneously with lots of patience.
