Do your kids get bored in this pandemic, staying at home? There are many fascinating indoor activities for kids that will make them engaged. 

During this covid-19 situation, it’s been a hard time for adults to spend the time indoors but at the same time imagine the kids, they miss a lot of fun and exploration we had during our childhood days. 

As a kid, they get annoyed quickly, but at the same time, they are open to learning new things in a fun-filled way.

So it’s our responsibility to help deal with the present situation, by introducing Indoor activities for kids, which help them in learning and exploring new things while they are at home.

We can make their world filled with color and creativity by using things available in our homes.

Play usually helps the bonding of child and parents stronger.

As indoor activities for kids are vital for a child’s development, Outdoor activities have equal importance.

In this post, we can discuss various Indoor activities for kid’s entertainment.

Importance of play 

Firstly, we need to understand the importance of play for kids. It helps to move on to various stages of life. 

  • Play not only makes a child physically stronger but at the same time helps them to be mentally fit.
  • Playing helps the kid to enhance creativity. Simultaneously develop their imagination, physical strength, ability, cognitive and emotional strength.
  • It is essential for healthy brain development.
  • A child becomes an expert in their world, as they start to play with adults or caregivers, kids usually come out of their fear boundaries and feel more confident.
  • Interaction between parents and children during the play can aid to understand them better and makes our bonding stronger.
  • Play enhances the readiness of children to learn, understand, and problem solve.

What is Sensory play ?

Sensory play helps stimulate the child’s senses such as smell, taste, touch, hear and sight.

Sensory play supports a child in developing fine motor skills, motor skills, cognitive skills, language skills, problem-solving skills, and self-regulating skills.

We can start the sensory play when a kid is around 4 -5month, by noticing the changes in them when they try to move their hands from fist to grab things.

I think it is a sign they are showing us that they are ready to explore the world.

11 Sensory play indoor activities for kids at home:

  • Allowing them to play with rice is an excellent way to aid sensory touch and feel the object.
  • Make rainbow dough in a zipper bag and allow them to play with colors without messing up.
  • Using a clip to pick pompom.
  • Placing blocks and different objects in a bucket and sorting them out based on color or texture.
  • Using stacks to play and arranging it in order.
  • Building a castle using paper cups.
  • Playing with pipe cleaners or Threading in a chart paper with some hole in it.
  • Making a pasta necklace with thread.
  • Play using building blocks.
  • Play-doh sets can be a great form of sensory activity.
  • A bowl mixed with 2- 3 varieties of beans and sorting it can be fun.

What are Water activities?

Water games are essential for a child to enhance their gross-motor skills, coordination, and physical strength. These skills can be achieved through pouring, filling, lifting, splashing, and squeezing helps in development of small muscles in their hands.

 11 indoor Water activities for kids at home:

  • Scooping, stirring, and pouring is played using 2 to 3 empty cups, a cup filled with water, and a measuring spoon.
  • In tub making paper boats and allowing a child to play with them.
  • Fishing game with some toy fishes in the tub filled with water.
  • Washing a toy car or doll with bubbles.
  • Placing some toys or blocks and asking them to pick them out.
  • Allowing them to wash a small-sized cloth with soap water.
  • Playing with syringes to fill water and emptying can be fun for kids.
  • Filling a balloon with water and placing it in a water tub.
  • Experimenting with colors while mixing them in separate bowls of water.
  • Setting up an ocean with underwater toys.
  • Play in a water tub using hands to imitate fishes, trying to clap, and other plays that come to mind at that instinct(my kid loves doing this).

What is Messy Play?

Messy play also comes under sensory activities. Some of us don’t encourage our children to have fun in messy play. These activities are usually played with mud, water, paint, slime, and clay.

It helps kids to have control in messy play and also boost their imagination and explore feelings.

Messy play can be introduced to a child when they are 6months old, which helps to touch and feel different things around them.

11 Messy indoor activities for kids at home:

  • Messy play using hands with different colored painting or if the child is too small we can use edible paint(with yogurt or whip using some food color)  
  • Making different impressions or stamping on play-doh.
  • Hide some toys under the jelly and allow them to dig it out.
  • A bowl with flour, food color, and water to knead a dough.
  • To plant seeds in a pot with water and mud.
  • Treasure hunt play using mud and toys hidden in it.
  • Mixing paint with shaving foam and playing it.
  • Painting with a balloon on paper.
  • A play using slime. 
  • Finger painting for toddlers.
  • Painting a window using shaving foam. 

There are many indoor activities for kids at home to keep them engaged without being bored. The activities are done under the monitoring of parents or caregivers until kids grow and have a clear understanding of dos and don’ts for ensuring the safety of children.
