Hello new mommies, Are you tired and worried about postpartum depression? Aren’t you aware whether you are affected or remain in a confused state? 

I promise you that you landed on the right blog post. Rather than making it complicated by sounding too technical, I prefer to make it more precise.

Don’t worry or panic, you’re not only the person struggling with postpartum depression but many face the same situation. People under postpartum depression can be of two types.

The first type of person knows that they are affected and starts taking proper treatment.

The second type of people is not aware of what is going on with them, leaving it carelessly, which leads them to face many unwanted situations in their lives.

What is postpartum depression?

Depression or feeling low in a woman’s physical, mental, and behavioral changes during pregnancy is termed Postpartum depression

When we consider the chemical changes, it is because of the sudden decline in hormones after the delivery. 

As we know, estrogen and progesterone play a vital role in balancing hormones, due to a rapid increase of hormone level during pregnancy, and a drastic drop after childbirth plays a significant role in depression. 

It has an effect not only on the mom but also affects the child’s dad and also the child.

Signs and Symptoms:

Symptoms may vary from one person to another. Some common symptoms the women face after childbirth are as follows:

Lack of sleep

Change in Cravings

Fatigue or Tiredness

Loss of pleasure

Frequent Mood swings

Not bonding with the baby or feel aloof

Suicidal thoughts

Inferiority complexity

Hurting others feelings

Lack of concentration

Crying without any reason

Identifying and treating postpartum depression at early stages is the right approach otherwise, it creates unwanted issues for the new mom and the baby if left untreated.

 Types of postpartum depression:

              Postpartum depression can be into three categorize

Baby blues:

More than 70% of women face this issue after giving birth to a child. You might experience unexpected mood swings (like feeling too happy and then feeling miserable), tiredness, anxiety, and so on.

It doesn’t need any treatment because it will start and last 1 to 2 weeks after delivery. Talking with a group of new moms or a person whom you’re comfortable with usually helps.

Postpartum depression(PPD):

PPD usually lasts up to 1 year after delivery with symptoms of feeling lonely, depressed, etc. Despite fluctuations that occur in the hormone levels after giving birth is also considered as the cause for it.

As the depth of depression varies from one person to another, the reason behind it remains unpredictable.

Postpartum psychosis:

It is the last stage where a person has failed to take necessary steps initially. It leads to mental illness after a few months of delivery. 

A depressed person, when they start living in a world that doesn’t exist (hallucination), drives them to the risk of hurting themselves or others.

Treatment of Postpartum depression:

  • Firstly, seek help from your family members, relatives, and friends. Try to go out for a walk, get a night of good sleep, doing meditation , yoga, reading book, listen to soothing music , follow a healthy diet.
  • Secondly, when you’re not in a position to self-treat, then go for a consultation with a GP or counselor. The treatment is given based on the stages a person is being affected.
  • Thirdly, antidepressants can be recommended based on the depth of the depression and when no treatment has favored you in coming out of depression. With the help of consultation and medication by your doctor, you can also breastfeed your baby.                

Prevention of postpartum depression:

The significance of prevention as “Prevention is better than cure” , diagnosing depression at early stages and treating it, helps to keep track of many problems at the time of pregnancy or even after childbirth.

  • During pregnancy, you can talk to your doctor if you face any grief so that they arrange a counseling session and treat your problems.
  • Even after childbirth, if you notice any symptoms of depression, talk to your doctor during the initial stages and get treated earlier.

Hacks for new mommies:

  1. Sleep well when your baby sleeps.
  2. Eat healthy.
  3. Do not take all opinions, that bother you from friends or relatives(perception differs from person to person).
  4. Do not overdo Exercise (seek advice on restrictions about your activity).
  5. Socialize with comfortable people and share your feelings(family or friends).
  6. Limit your visitors on the initial days when you turn home from the hospital.
  7. Limit your screen time.
  8. Be prepared for good and bad days.
  9. Be practical on your expectancy(for yourself and baby).
  10. Getting close with the mom community also helps when you share your problems and get advice from them on how they dealt with this situation in their life.

Don’t panic about postpartum depression, as it is treated easily with proper medication, self-care, and counseling. And in this world of advancement, there are solutions available based on the depth of each problem. 

Once you’re being diagnosed with postpartum depression, treating it at earlier stages helps you to live in a healthy and peaceful environment.
